Negatieve ervaring: I don't recommend it! I bought the online course A0-A2. All the materials are online. That's definitely a plus. But: - After starting the course, I got the impression they're not interested in teaching you. Business comes first. - Even though the course wasn't called "intensive," I got the impression it was. The material is covered very quickly; whether I understood it or not, doesn't matter. The next lesson is a new topic. There's a lot of homework. You have to learn 50-100+ new words for each lesson. After two lessons and two homework assignments, I had 270 different words in my vocabulary. Every lesson, you're rushing somewhere. - People in the group change frequently. And it doesn't matter which lesson it is.There were 12 people in the first lesson, 8 after two lessons, and then new people came again. Choose another location if you want to learn, or don't buy the full course but take the trial. Otherwise, you won't get a refund.

Learning a language in general is an intensive activity. The online course has lessons twice a week and covers indeed a lot of material. It is also described on our website that the time investment outside of the lessons is about 4 hours per lesson. This should be taken into consideration when choosing a course and the decision if this suits your schedule. We regret the course pace was too fast for you.

Our full level course is divided in four submodules. After each module, students can stop and start, depending on the purchased course module. The flexibility to choose your course duration indeed leads to a flow in participants during the course. This should however not influence your personal learning objectives.

Positieve ervaring: I attended an intensive summer school A0-A2 course in person over 8 weeks in 2025. Firstly the positives: the staff are professional, the locale is clean and well-maintained, the classrooms are mostly quiet and ideal for learning, and there are nice extra touches such as the provision of tea/coffee and biscuits for the students. The teaching material has been well-curated, and the book series the courses are based upon, Contact, is simply excellent. It offers a really useful and practically-applicable curriculum. I found myself able to conduct conversations in all my daily activities once this course had been completed, and what’s more, I find that people continue to reply to me in Dutch, even when they realise that I am not a native speaker. To this extent, the course was a success and worth the money. And yet, there are problems that prevent me from giving 5 stars. Firstly, the intensive course is marketed as being 96 class hours, but once you read the small print you realise that Dutch First has decided that a class hour is 45 minutes. Therefore, the actual course is not 96 hours, but rather 72 hours. Furthermore the text- and workbooks are not included in the price. Once you factor those costs in, then the hourly rate comes to approximately €18,50, which is an acceptable price for a small class in an intensive course, and so I don’t understand why they feel the need to market a 72 hour course as having 96 hours. I ought to say that this almost prevented me from signing up as I suspected this place of being a scam, and had to visit it in person to confirm it wasn’t. There’s more. The summer course started at the end of July, which benefitted me as I signed up last minute, but I was told by fellow students that it was originally meant to start at the beginning of July. Some of them had signed up for the original starting date, and were not able to attend the full course once the starting date had been delayed due to scheduling conflicts. Dutch First offered them the option of moving to an evening course at the same level, but this did not suit everyone, and one of my course-mates lost out on a week’s teaching. As far as I know, Dutch First does not offer refunds in these or any other circumstances. Furthermore, due presumably to a lack of interest, other introductory courses were merged with the A0-A1 section of the intensive course, meaning that the class size became larger, and due to the haphazard nature of the merging, some of the students missed key introductory lessons, which naturally slowed down the pace of teaching. Now, a good and experienced teacher can handle this, and we had one of those for 4 and a half weeks of the 8 week course. The other times we relied on a supply teacher, and what we suspected was a volunteer. Now these people were friendly and professional, but they simply lacked the experience, the drive and the easy familiarity of the veteran teacher, to the extent that the final 3 weeks were less enjoyable and more of a chore than the initial 5. Also, quite frankly, a supply teacher and a volunteer / new teacher are not worth the price of admission. Intensive summer courses are probably essential to acquire a foundation in Dutch, if you live in this country and need to learn the language quickly, and I don’t regret attending this one in the least, despite the problems.

With regard to the hours, there is no small print, it is clearly described on the course page that we work with lesson hours of 45 minutes. However, we understand possible confusion.

As you might understand, a group course can start when the minimum amount of participants has been reached, this indeed may result in a changed start date with the goal to reach the sufficient amount and starting the course. Happily you could start your course as planned! We do offer a refund or another solution in case our changes lead to less availability. It’s a pity you are assuming we don’t.

During a course the class size can always change, as people can step in for the submodules, especially during summer people can start flexible. The class size will always be a maximum of 14 participants, ensuring a small group.

We are sorry to find out you describe some teachers as volunteers, as they are most definitely not. The teachers you refer to are indeed less experienced than the first teacher on the course, which makes sense considering the age difference, but not less qualified! We can assure you all teachers are well educated and qualified as a NT2 teacher. You were more than welcome to ask us about their credentials if this was something you were unsure of. Our staff on the front desk is every day available for your questions and concerns and are happy to speak with you.

Negatieve ervaring: If anyone learned anything from their online course then chapeau bas. I tried twice the A0-A2 but to be honest after trying like two lessons it feels like the teacher and the students are in two different worlds. The teacher speaks mostly Dutch, we don't understand almost nothing and we proceed to the next topic. Don't waste your money. I only attended cuz It was free. Have a nice day.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are sorry the course didn’t feel like the right fit for you. For our A0–A2 online course we indeed use Dutch from the beginning, as immersion helps learners to quickly adapt to the language. We understand this can feel challenging at first.

Progress in language learning also depends on regular participation and preparing homework. Missing many lessons (attending 10 out of 32 lessons the first time and only one lesson the second time), can make it difficult to follow and to see progress, as it builds progressively over the full course.

Fantastische ervaring: Uitstekende zelfstudiecursus Nederlands voor mensen die flexibele tijd nodig hebben om te studeren. De ondersteuning van de docenten is geweldig.
